Dear Member,

Notice of British Simmental Withdrawal from Hosting the 2026 World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation Congress.

As you are aware, the Society was greatly looking forward to welcoming the ‘Simmental world’ to the UK when hosting the 25th World Simmental Congress in 2026. However, after great consideration, and due to a combination of circumstances, the difficult decision was taken to inform the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) of our withdrawal from hosting the 2026 event. It is very much hoped that it is a postponement and that we will be able to host it in a future year.

As you’re aware, the presence of Blue Tongue Virus (BTV) in the UK is continuing to cause challenges with some unknowns, and with Government announcements to come. There are also animal health issues in some European countries and again with the UK Government taking a responsible and risk averse approach to them.

The consequence of this, and as things stand, the planned programme of events and organisation for the 2026 World Congress in the UK was a little compromised, and with uncertainties. With only fourteen months to the planned event, we have to be very mindful and considerate to those breeders who have been approached to host visits. There are also significant financial liabilities we would now have to commit to and with regards to hotels, venues, and associated requirements. Whilst there has been a real positivity around the Society hosting the Congress, companies willing and likely to be involved with the event are also a little cautious over their commitments.

The Society remains fully committed to welcoming the WSFF to the UK at a future date. However, the Council feels that under the present collective circumstances, a postponement and withdrawal from hosting in 2026 is the regrettable, but correct and responsible course of action to take. In acknowledging the decision, the WSFF has been very understanding and has indicated that they hope, and would be happy, that the UK can host the Congress in a future year. I hope that this notice informs you and please look out for future communications around forward breed promotion.

Yours sincerely

Chris Martindale

BSCS President
